Why it's listed

Harlow Row is a group of Second Empire townhouses at 100-106 Market Street in Poughkeepsie, built around 1874 by William Harlow, a local architect, builder and one-time mayor. The three-story brick row has a bellcast mansard roof with wrought iron cresting, a rusticated first story with four arched doorways and three-sided bays, and dormers framed by simple wood pilasters. A two-story Romanesque tower with a conical roof was added on the north side between 1887 and 1895 by owner Charles P. Robinson, a wholesale liquor merchant. Inside, vestibules, tiled hallways and boldly carved stairs survive. Harlow probably built these smaller, more modest houses after Mayor Harvey Eastman's Second Empire townhouse venture nearby failed, and no owner is traceable until 1880, when two lawyers bought houses. Similar rows once stood in Poughkeepsie, but this is the only surviving example of the type, which gives the row its importance as late-nineteenth-century urban housing. Some bays were rebuilt in 1981.

Significance in brief: The row is described as representative of late-nineteenth-century urban housing in the Mid-Hudson Valley. Similar small-scale townhouse rows once existed in Poughkeepsie, but this is the only surviving example. Intact period interior features add to its significance.
