Why it's listed

Belmont is an unusually large brick house at 759 Belmont Avenue in Charlottesville, dating from about 1837 and described in a Late Georgian style. It has seven bays, two stories on a raised basement, 9-over-9 windows on the first floor, jack arches, a deep wooden cornice and chimneys flush with the end walls. The original front carries a two-story neo-classical revival portico with four square paneled columns and a Greek Revival door frame. A brick wing was added later on the Belmont Avenue side. John Winn mentioned his residence on his 539-acre farm, Belle-Mont, in his will before his death in 1837. The house was sold at auction to Slaughter W. Ficklin in 1847 and later passed through several owners. It was the manor house of a farm that grew into the Belmont neighborhood, which took its name from it. In March 1865 a Colonel Wells used it as headquarters during a brief Union occupation of the city. It is in good condition and is used as apartments.

Significance in brief: The house was the manor house of a roughly 500-acre farm that became Charlottesville's large Belmont neighborhood, and the area takes its name from it. A Colonel Wells also used it as his headquarters during a brief Union occupation of Charlottesville in March 1865.
