Why it's listed

Set on nearly 15 acres along North Greece Road in Greece, Monroe County, this one-and-one-half-story farmhouse was built around 1832 and is attributed to William Covert, who bought the land in 1810. Its walls are made of variously colored field cobbles laid in regular rows, with limestone quoins at the corners and limestone lintels and sills around the openings. Greek Revival details include a deep entablature with cornice returns, eyebrow windows with cast-iron grilles, and an off-center entrance with sidelights beneath a small Doric portico. A cobblestone rear wing and a cobblestone well also date from the period. The house is one of four surviving cobblestone buildings in Greece and is considered the best of them, as well as an impressive example within the wider region. Later owners included the Trowell, Harris and Brodie families. Much of the original farmland has since been subdivided for housing. The house is still used as a home.

Significance in brief: The nomination argues the house is a distinguished example of cobblestone construction, using medium-sized field cobbles in regular rows with limestone quoins and trim, typical of 1830s rural vernacular buildings. It is described as the best surviving example among the four cobblestone buildings in Greece. It is also a fine example of vernacular Greek Revival domestic architecture.
