Lanesville served travelers as an ordinary and housed the Lanesville post office from 1807. Together they illustrate early development of Loudoun County and early republic architecture.","narrative":"Within Claude Moore Park in Sterling, a short stretch of Vestal's Gap Road runs past Lanesville, a house and tavern built around 1807. The road trace, about six-tenths of a mile long, belonged to an early route from Alexandria and Leesburg toward the Blue Ridge and the Ohio country. Planters hauled tobacco along it, settlers used it to move west, and troops marched on it during the French and Indian War. George Washington also traveled it in 1770. Lanesville is a two-story timber-framed house with a stone foundation and stone end chimneys. It was licensed as an ordinary, serving travelers, and housed the Lanesville post office from 1807. The house was later enlarged and remained in the Bridges family from 1817 to 1941. Newer turnpikes replaced the road by the 1820s. The eastern section keeps the strongest historic character, with an unsurfaced bed and multiple alignments, and the road and house together show early settlement and travel in Loudoun County.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1725-Circa 1820","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Early republic","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Now part of Claude Moore Park, a county-owned public park used for outdoor recreation; the road is partly graveled and partly grass-covered, and the house has been altered over time.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.959789-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/6816/41681665/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/99001722.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001722/53b83d4f86-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001722/53b83d4f86-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Cecouchman","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lanesville-8106.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Cecouchman</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Lanesville-8106.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681665","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vestal%27s_Gap_Road_and_Lanesville_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14713448"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/loudoun-county/vestals-gap-road-and-lanesville-historic-district-99001722/"}
