Cuyler in downtown Pampa, Gray County, Texas, built in 1916 as the third Pampa office of the White Deer Land Co. It was designed by Kaufman & Berry and now houses a museum.","why_significant":"The building is tied to the settlement of a four-county Texas panhandle region, since land sales were handled there from 1916 until the company liquidated in 1957. It is also a good example of an eclectic two-part commercial block and the only known joint project of Amarillo architects William Raymond Kaufman and Joseph Champ Berry.","narrative":"Built in 1916 at 116 S. Cuyler in downtown Pampa, this two-story red brick building with terra cotta trim served as the third Pampa office of the White Deer Land Co., the main landholder and developer in the region from 1886 to 1957. Amarillo architects Kaufman & Berry designed it with offices on the ground floor plus rented offices and apartments, some meant for guests from England. Over the years tenants included a lawyer, a dentist, a doctor, a Masonic lodge, a post office and, briefly, a Catholic congregation. Its design mixes Prairie Style windows, Victorian-style bay windows, a stepped parapet and simple classical pilasters. Land sales across a four-county area were made here until the company liquidated in 1957. The building later became a history museum, opened in 1970 and deeded to Gray County in 1971. Its interior retains oak woodwork, four fireplaces, pressed metal ceilings and the company safe with its deeds and records. A brick carriage house behind it also contributes to the property.","period_of_significance":"1916 - 1949","architect_builder":"Kaufman & Berry","architectural_style":"Other: 2-part commercial block","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a history museum; described as in excellent condition with minor modifications, including a 1983 elevator addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:23.722829-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/67/9721/40972167/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_TX/99001701.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001701/5e6c747235-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001701/5e6c747235-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"Jeffrey Beall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White_Deer_Land_Company_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Beall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:White_Deer_Land_Company_Building.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/40972167","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q110000945"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/texas/gray-county/white-deer-land-company-building-99001701/"}
