Its distinguishing features include window and entry surrounds, large cornice brackets, and mantels and a center-passage stair with chamfering, wave-like moldings and decorative paneling. The house was also built for John Welfley, an industrialist, and later held by the Shuler family until 1968.","narrative":"Built about 1876 on the south side of the Shenandoah River, across from the town of Shenandoah in Page County, Virginia, this two-story stone farmhouse is finished in stucco and topped with a metal hip roof. It was built for John Welfley, who ran a sawmill, flour mill, distillery and Confederate gunpowder contract during and after the Civil War. Farmer Hiram J. Shuler bought the farm in 1881, and his family kept it until 1968. The house blends Greek Revival and Italianate details, including peaked window hoods, a sidelighted front entry and large cornice brackets. Inside, the center-passage stair and several mantels show chamfering, wave-like moldings and decorative paneling. A stone milkhouse, bank barn foundations, a watering trough and chickenhouses remain on the 9.75-acre parcel. The property was recognized for the vernacular character of its architecture, with a period of significance from about 1876 to about 1930.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1876-ca. 1930","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Greek Revival; Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant/not in use; the house is described as retaining good integrity, and the present owners purchased the core parcel in 1997.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:59.817523-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/6/6824/41682406/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/99001604.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001604/de993f7578-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001604/de993f7578-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Ser Amantio di Nicolao","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Welfley%E2%80%93Shuler_House_near_Shenandoah,_facade_view.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ser Amantio di Nicolao</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Welfley%E2%80%93Shuler_House_near_Shenandoah,_facade_view.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41682406","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Welfley%E2%80%93Shuler_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q16903064"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/page-county/welfley-shuler-house-99001604/"}
