It is also noted for its sandstone and terra cotta exterior, its marble banking hall and its original vault. The excerpt available does not include the full statement of significance.","narrative":"Rising thirteen stories above the corner of Broadway and Sixth Avenue in downtown San Diego, this combined bank and office building was designed in 1928 by William Templeton Johnson in the Italian Romanesque Revival style. Its buff exterior combines polished Briar Hill sandstone on the lower floors with matching terra cotta above, set on a Scotch Rose granite base. Because the bank has no thirteenth floor, the top level is called the fourteenth. Inside, the banking hall features pink marble floors, thirty-five marble pillars, nineteen varieties of marble, a coffered plaster ceiling and antique chandeliers. A 1942 mural of Abraham Lincoln by La Jolla artist Walter Kumme remains above a former museum area. The basement holds a circular steel vault door made by the Mosler Safe Company and installed in 1928. Johnson was so pleased with the design that he moved his own practice to the top floor soon after completion. The interior was extensively refurbished in the late 1950s and 1960s, and the building is described as in excellent condition.","period_of_significance":null,"architect_builder":"William Templeton Johnson (architect)","architectural_style":"Italian Romanesque Revival","criteria":[],"status_note":"Described as being in excellent condition; the form lists the current function as vacant/not in use and work in progress.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.207791-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/99001565.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001565/daa8e5fca1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001565/daa8e5fca1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Jeffrey Beall","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Diego_Trust_and_Savings_Bank_Building.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Jeffrey Beall</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:San_Diego_Trust_and_Savings_Bank_Building.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860978","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Diego_Trust_and_Savings_Bank_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5818281"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/san-diego-county/san-diego-trust-and-savings-bank-building-99001565/"}
