It retains integrity of setting, association, design, materials and workmanship to a notable degree.","narrative":"This freight depot at 7 Main Street in Colfax was built by the Central Pacific Railroad around 1880 to a standard Southern Pacific plan known as Freight House No. 2. It is a rectangular, wood-frame building with a gable roof, wide overhanging eaves, crossed braces and the vertical and horizontal stickwork typical of the Stick style. Original sliding loading-bay doors survive. The depot served as a shipping and receiving point for goods such as mining supplies, gold and fruit. In 1905 it was moved piece by piece to the site of the burned passenger depot, and around 1930 it was moved again when the tracks were realigned and a second main line added. Later it was converted into an auto parts store, with interior partitions removed and some openings altered. It is believed to be the only freight depot remaining in Placer County, and it recalls the role of less-than-carload freight in the town's growth between about 1880 and 1945.","period_of_significance":"circa 1880 - 1945","architect_builder":"Central Pacific Railroad Company","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Stick","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as an auto parts store; interior and exterior were modified in the 1970s, with changes described as reversible.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:28.233347-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/99001564.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001564/b92cb38d33-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001564/b92cb38d33-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"liannadavis","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colfax_Freight_Depot_2012-09-16_15-51-01.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">liannadavis</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Colfax_Freight_Depot_2012-09-16_15-51-01.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860386","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q47488522"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/placer-county/colfax-freight-depot-99001564/"}
