The 13.5-acre nominated parcel also includes a small wine-press outbuilding.","why_significant":"The mill is described as a remarkably intact, large-scale early nineteenth century stone industrial building, a rare survivor of its type in the Southern Tier. It is also tied to the early industrial history of Hammondsport and to the later growth of the regional wine industry.","narrative":"Built in 1836 by master millwright John Cappell of Penn Yan, this four-story stone building at the southwest end of Keuka Lake in Hammondsport began as a grist mill with four run of stones powered by three overshot wheels. The milling venture lost money and folded by 1840. The thick, load-bearing random ashlar walls, rough quoins, stone lintels and sills, and many original six-over-six windows survived, and the building later served as storage. In 1881 it became the winery of the Glen Wine Company, and after 1901 the Roualet Wine Company added two wings. Prohibition, then the flood of 1935, ended its productive use, and it was used only sporadically for storage for roughly fifty years. A late nineteenth century concrete block outbuilding behind it holds an essentially intact wine press. The mill is valued as a rare, very early and large masonry industrial building and as a link to local milling and winemaking.","period_of_significance":"1836-1930","architect_builder":"John Cappell","architectural_style":"Early 19th Century: vernacular","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Described as vacant or underutilized for decades but retaining a high degree of integrity; recently acquired by a new owner who plans to restore it.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.443587-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001545.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001545/2262c829ed-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001545/2262c829ed-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mallory_Mill_Apr_11.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mallory_Mill_Apr_11.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100009603","name":"Village of Hammondsport Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/village-of-hammondsport-historic-district-100009603/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321989","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mallory_Mill","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6744278"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/steuben-county/mallory-mill-99001545/"}
