The original house dates to ca. 1840 and an Italianate addition to ca. 1861.","why_significant":"The nomination finds it significant under Criterion A for agriculture (a large livestock, grain and tobacco farm) and commerce (a summer boarding house for boys), and under Criterion C for architecture. It pairs a vernacular Greek Revival house built for legislator William Callaway with an Italianate addition attributed to Roanoke Valley builder Benjamin Deyerle. Its ca. 1861 brick silo is reported to be the first in Franklin County.","narrative":"Evergreen is a brick farmhouse on bottomland near the Blackwater River, five miles west of Rocky Mount in Franklin County, Virginia. It was built in two campaigns. About 1840, William Callaway, a five-term member of the House of Delegates, built a rectangular Greek Revival dwelling on a raised basement. Around 1861, Benjamin Deyerle, a well-known Roanoke Valley builder who had bought the 4,500-acre property in 1858, added a front Italianate wing with a bay window, bracketed cornice and decorative porch. Deyerle's son Henry farmed the land until 1923 and also ran a summer boarding house for boys. The property includes a ca. 1861 brick silo, reportedly the first in the county, plus a ca. 1920 barn and a ca. 1930 tenant house. A historic brick kitchen was razed in 1989, but the house retains most of its original windows, doors, floors and trim. Its farming history and the contrast between its two building periods support its listing.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1840-1923","architect_builder":"BENJAMIN DEYERLE (?)","architectural_style":"Mid-Nineteenth Century (Greek Revival); Late Victorian (Italianate)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Current functions listed as single dwelling, with some outbuildings vacant or not in use and a barn still in use; the house is being restored by its current owners.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.852562-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/52/6807/41680752/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/99001504.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001504/1cb57c0df9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001504/1cb57c0df9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Rdeyerle","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Evergreen-Callaway-Deyerle_House_in_Franklin_County_Va.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Rdeyerle</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Evergreen-Callaway-Deyerle_House_in_Franklin_County_Va.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41680752","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Evergreen_(Rocky_Mount,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712301"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/franklin/evergreen-callaway-deyerle-house-99001504/"}
