It includes a two-story brick and frame house built in phases in the early-to-mid 19th century, a stuccoed frame building called the Cottage, and several outbuildings.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the property is significant under Criterion C for the architectural quality and integrity of its evolved main house and the Cottage, which is thought to be one of the oldest rural stores in the county. It is also significant under Criterion A in health/medicine as the home and office of country doctor H. L. Baptist. The period of significance runs from about 1800 to 1942.","narrative":"Home Tract is a three-acre property in the village of Ivy, Albemarle County, Virginia, beside the old Three Notched Road. Its main house began as a story-and-a-half frame dwelling to which a two-story brick section was added, probably in the second quarter of the nineteenth century, with later alterations including a full second story and a rear ell added about 1920. Interiors show late Georgian and vernacular Greek Revival detail. Beside the house stands the Cottage, whose earliest part appears to have been a store serving travelers, and it may be among the oldest buildings in Ivy. Benjamin Wood, who bought the land in 1826, apparently built the original sections. In 1920 Dr. H. L. Baptist, a country doctor, bought the property and enlarged the Cottage as his office; the family lived there until 1942. The property was recognized for its architecture and its link to rural medical practice.","period_of_significance":"Ca. 1800-1942","architect_builder":"Unknown (the house was apparently built by Benjamin Wood)","architectural_style":"Georgian; Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The main house and the Cottage are both habitable; the Cottage is used as a rental unit, and the attics and meathouse are undergoing rehabilitation.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:01.271806-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/61/6793/41679361/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/99001501.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001501/33ff0469cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001501/33ff0469cd-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Home_Tract_at_Ivy.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Home_Tract_at_Ivy.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679361","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Home_Tract","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712566"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/albemarle-county/home-tract-99001501/"}
