It is also a fine example of typical early 20th century mill construction. It is rated locally significant under Criteria A and C.","narrative":"Musketaquid Mills is a four-story brick mill at the corner of Davidson and Howe Streets in Lowell's Belvidere section, near the Concord River. It was built in three phases: the six southern bays in 1909, a small boiler room in 1912, and the northern eight bays and fourth floor between 1915 and about 1925. The building has segmental arched windows with granite sills, corbelled brick cornices and little other ornament. It replaced a leather factory and housed worsted textile production, first under the Musketaquid company and then the U.S. Worsted Company, until 1931. A paper box maker then occupied it into the 1980s. Belvidere once held many industrial buildings, but by 1950 this mill was the only one left, and it remains the last intact historic mill in the area. It was listed for its role in Lowell's industrial growth and as a good example of early 20th century mill construction. A rehabilitation completed in 1997 converted it to offices.","period_of_significance":"1909-1949","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early 20th century Industrial","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant for several years, then rehabilitated (completed December 1997) as offices; occupied by the Lowell Department of Welfare.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:05.213649-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/49/7959/63795949/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/99001480.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001480/ec38682574-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001480/ec38682574-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LowellMA_MusketaquidMills.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:LowellMA_MusketaquidMills.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63795949","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Musketaquid_Mills","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715735"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/middlesex-county/musketaquid-mills-99001480/"}
