It is also significant under Criterion C as one of the finest examples of early-twentieth-century tobacco architecture in the city, with slow-burn construction and unusual multicolored brickwork. The second warehouse is noncontributing because 1970s alterations overwhelmed its original construction.","narrative":"Two storage warehouses on Clark Street in Greenville, North Carolina, were added to an existing tobacco warehouse district covering about four-tenths of an acre. The contributing building, Storage Warehouse #2, was built about 1905 for the American Tobacco Company. It is a one-story rectangular brick building of 12,315 square feet with a low gable roof, raked parapets, skylights and walls laid in randomly mixed red, yellow, brown and orange brick. Inside, heavy timber posts reflect slow-burn construction suited to aging tobacco in hogsheads. After the company's Greenville plant closed in 1927, a leaf dealer used it, and later a hammock company. The second building, a frame warehouse first built about 1905 and enlarged about 1916, was covered in brick veneer in the 1970s and is counted as noncontributing. The addition was justified by the warehouse's local importance to Greenville's commerce and industry and its distinctive early-twentieth-century tobacco architecture, which strengthens the original district's western corner.","period_of_significance":"1905 - 1947","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Industrial Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Storage Warehouse #2 is still in use as a warehouse, with a 1950s wing housing a maintenance facility.
