It reinforces the district's significance in community planning and development and in architecture, with Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, foursquare and bungalow houses built for white-collar workers who commuted by streetcar. The service station and funeral home mark the western limit of the historic neighborhood.","narrative":"This small addition to Wilmington's Carolina Heights Historic District takes in twelve houses and two outbuildings on the west side of North Thirteenth Street, along with a former service station and funeral home on Market Street. The houses were among the first built in the Winoca Terrace subdivision, which developers began grading in 1911 and which offered paved streets, utilities and trolley access. Residents were largely white-collar workers, many employed by the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad. The houses range from Queen Anne-influenced and Dutch Colonial Revival designs to foursquares, Craftsman bungalows and a brick Colonial Revival dwelling, all set back evenly on landscaped lots. Deed restrictions set minimum construction costs and building setbacks. The Mission Revival service station and Colonial Revival funeral home, both from about 1936, were part of the neighborhood into the 1980s and mark its western edge. The houses had been left out of the original district listing by oversight, and adding them completes the historic neighborhood boundary.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1914-1939","architect_builder":"Unknown","architectural_style":"Queen Anne, Colonial Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman, Mission/Spanish Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The former Sinclair Service Station was undergoing renovation at the time of the form; the houses are largely intact, with all but one of the twelve retaining integrity.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:52.812912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/55/7215/47721555/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/99001448.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001448/80ddce74b4-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001448/80ddce74b4-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Wm.fridrich","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fridrich_Residence,1916_Princess_Street_Wilmington_North_Carolina.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Wm.fridrich</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fridrich_Residence,1916_Princess_Street_Wilmington_North_Carolina.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"03000344","name":"Wilmington Historic District (Boundary Increase)","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/north-carolina/wilmington-historic-district-boundary-increase-03000344/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721555","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carolina_Heights_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19460849"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/new-hanover-county/carolina-heights-historic-district-boundary-increase-99001448/"}
