It is significant under Criterion C as a representative mid-nineteenth-century Gothic Revival church adapted for Orthodox Jewish worship. It was also the original home of the Baptist congregation that became Riverside Church.","narrative":"Built in 1850 as the Norfolk Street Baptist Church, this Gothic Revival building at 60-64 Norfolk Street on Manhattan's Lower East Side has changed hands with the neighborhood around it. Its symmetrical brick design features a gabled entrance pavilion, two projecting towers, pointed-arch windows and ribbed vaulting inside. The Baptist congregation left in 1859 and later became Riverside Church. The building then served as a Methodist Episcopal mission church to immigrant poor before a Jewish congregation organized in 1852 bought it in 1885. Congregation Beth Hamedrash Hagodol has used it continuously since, and it is described as the oldest established Russian Orthodox Jewish congregation in the United States. The congregation added an ark, a bema and a women's gallery, and architects Schneider & Herter stabilized the structure in the 1890s. Murals of Palestine were probably painted in the 1930s or 1940s. Though the congregation is now small, the synagogue remains active and preserves much of its historic interior.","period_of_significance":"1850-1949","architect_builder":"Original architect unknown; Schneider & Herter, architects for renovation/structural work in 1890s","architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century: Gothic Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still an active synagogue with a small congregation; the building has been altered several times and is described as in need of restoration, though it retains historic integrity, especially inside.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.165357-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001438.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001438/65366045a1-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001438/65366045a1-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"This photo was taken by participant/team Sheila as part of the Commons:Wikipedia Takes Manhattan project on April 4, 2008.
