Kirby, Petit & Green designed it and Hedden Construction Co. was the general contractor.","why_significant":"The building is significant under Criterion A for its association with New York City's commercial history and under Criterion C as an excellent example of Neo-Classical architecture by the prominent firm of Kirby, Petit & Green. Its overscaled columns and continuous window bays gave a prominent security engraving company a striking corporate image among growing numbers of skyscrapers.","narrative":"Completed in 1908 at 70 Broad Street in Lower Manhattan, this five-story granite building served as the headquarters of the American Bank Note Company, a leading maker of bank notes, stamps, stock certificates and other securities. The firm, formed in 1858 from a merger of several engraving companies, wanted to stay near the financial institutions it served and to project prominence among rising skyscrapers. Kirby, Petit & Green designed a freestanding Neo-Classical Revival building on a narrow trapezoidal lot, with a rusticated base, monumental fluted Ionic columns on the Broad Street front, Doric pilasters on the sides and a decorated cornice. Hedden Construction Company built it. The company moved its administrative offices out in 1988, and the building was converted to fast-food restaurants, with original interiors removed. Rehabilitation in 1998-99 followed federal standards. The building is recognized for its link to the city's commercial history and for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"1908-1949","architect_builder":"Kirby, Petit & Green, architects; Hedden Construction Co., General Contractor","architectural_style":"Early 20th Century Revivals: Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Interior finishes were removed when the building became a fast-food court in the late 1980s; interior and exterior rehabilitation was carried out in 1998-99. Current functions are commerce/business and restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.326688-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001436.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001436/94361b7fb7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001436/94361b7fb7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Gryffindor","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_Bank_Note_Company_005.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Gryffindor</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:American_Bank_Note_Company_005.JPG"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"07000063","name":"Wall Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/wall-street-historic-district-07000063/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75319245","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Bank_Note_Company_Building","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q3208373"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/manhattan/american-bank-note-company-building-99001436/"}
