Miller as a combined residence and medical office.","why_significant":"It is a well-preserved, locally distinctive example of early twentieth-century Colonial Revival architecture, meeting Criterion C. It was also associated for decades with two locally prominent families, Dr. John G. Miller and Dr. Clarence H. Mackey, who were active in medicine and community life. It retains a high level of integrity despite the rear gymnasium addition.","narrative":"Built around 1905 at 5440 Broadway in the Village of Lancaster, this two-and-one-half-story brick house combined a family home with a doctor's office. It has a truncated hipped roof, five tall corbeled chimneys, broken-pediment dormers, a two-story bay window and a flat-roofed front porch with clustered columns. Dr. John G. Miller, who practiced medicine in the village for nearly sixty years, had it built. He also served as health officer, as a longtime school board member and president, and as a bank organizer and later president. His son-in-law, Dr. Clarence Mackey, shared the office and later lived in the house until his death in 1946. His widow remained until 1955. The upper floor was divided into apartments after 1946. In 1957 a boys' club bought the property and added a gymnasium behind the house. The house is valued as a well-preserved local example of Colonial Revival design, with original woodwork and art glass inside.","period_of_significance":"c. 1905-1949","architect_builder":"unknown","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals/Colonial Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Used since 1957 as a boys' and girls' club recreational and social facility, with a one-story gymnasium addition at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.156526-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001422.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001422/43bd7d8a4a-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001422/43bd7d8a4a-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miller-Mackey_House_Nov_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miller-Mackey_House_Nov_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312727","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miller-Mackey_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6859047"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/miller-mackey-house-99001422/"}
