It was built by brickmaker and builder John Richardson.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an intact, locally significant example of vernacular Italianate residential design in this western New York village. It was built in three stages beginning c. 1840 and retains a high degree of architectural integrity. It is also tied to John Richardson, a local brickmaker and builder who erected many early brick homes in the village.","narrative":"This brick house at 5653 Broadway in Lancaster, Erie County, New York, began around 1840 as a rectangular story-and-a-half cottage. In 1868 a two-story wing facing Broadway was added, and a compatible shed-roofed addition was built at the rear late in the twentieth century. The walls are unpainted common-bond brick on a stone foundation, with segmental-arched windows, brick voussoirs, louvered shutters and a wooden front porch. A one-and-a-half-story clapboard barn survives on the lot. John Richardson, a local brickmaker and builder, built the house. His five-acre brickyard stood behind it, and many early brick homes and commercial buildings in the village are said to have used his bricks. He also built the Richardson Block on Main Street and lived here until his death in 1878. The house is valued as an intact local example of vernacular Italianate design. Its interior has been converted to a combined residence and office.","period_of_significance":"c. 1840-1949","architect_builder":"Richardson, John","architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Historic single dwelling now used as a combined residence and office; the interior has been converted from its original single-family use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.028713-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001419.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001419/138b55f6c9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001419/138b55f6c9-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Richardson_House_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Richardson_House_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312741","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Richardson_House_(Lancaster,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14706685"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/richardson-john-house-99001419/"}
