Zuidema. A board-and-batten barn from the same period stands behind it.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be an intact, locally significant and distinctive example of Italianate residential design with Eastlake ornamentation. It typifies the upper middle-class homes built in the village in the last quarter of the nineteenth century. It also reflects the Dutch settlers who shaped Lancaster's architectural and socioeconomic heritage.","narrative":"Built around 1876 at 5556 Broadway in Lancaster, New York, this two-story wood-frame house combines Italianate form with Eastlake-style ornament. It has a T-shaped facade, weatherboard siding, a rubble stone foundation, and a truncated hipped roof with paired brackets under the eaves. A wraparound porch with turned posts, sawn fan brackets and a swag-like balustrade adds decoration. Inside, the original stair hall, mahogany handrail, pocket doors, plaster ceiling ornament and marble mantels survive. A period board-and-batten barn stands at the rear. John H. Zuidema, a Dutch immigrant who came to the area in 1849, had the house built after leaving his farm for the village; he lived there until his death in 1879. Tjeerd Idsardi, another Dutch settler, later acquired it. The house was listed as an intact local example of upper middle-class Victorian residential architecture in the village.","period_of_significance":"c. 1876-1949","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Stick/Eastlake and Italianate","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling, as in its historic use; the form says it retains high integrity of design.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.883912-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001416.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001416/9fa0429524-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001416/9fa0429524-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zuidema-Idsardi_House_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Zuidema-Idsardi_House_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312749","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zuidema-Idsardi_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q8075058"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/zuidema-idsardi-house-99001416/"}
