Built of rock-faced ashlar stone between 1916 and 1919, it has three connected sections: a Doric portico with fluted columns and a pediment holding an art-glass Masonic emblem, a three-story entrance block, and a large rear section with a public hall below the third-floor lodge room. Buffalo architects Mann and Cook designed it, and Frank G. Hanssel of Buffalo built it, reusing some stone from the old Maute Foundry. The cornerstone was laid in 1916, and World War One likely delayed completion. It is regarded as the Village's finest Neo-Classical Revival building and one of the best examples of the style in the region. It is also the only documented Lancaster work of Harold J. Cook and of Hanssel. Exterior and interior remain little altered, though a 1940s fire changed the basement.","period_of_significance":"1916-1949","architect_builder":"Mann & Cook, architect; Hanssel, Frank G., builder","architectural_style":"Late 19th & 20th Century Revivals/Neo-Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Has served as the Masonic Temple since its completion and is still used as a social/meeting hall; the form describes it as little altered from the original.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.923996-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001410.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001410/f828ae8af2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001410/f828ae8af2-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DePew_Lodge_No._823,_Free_and_Accepted_Masons_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:DePew_Lodge_No._823,_Free_and_Accepted_Masons_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312751","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DePew_Lodge_No._823,_Free_and_Accepted_Masons","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5244041"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/erie-county/depew-lodge-no-823-free-and-accepted-masons-99001410/"}
