Falls Road, the main street, runs northwest from Main Street toward the Tar River and is lined with sidewalks and mature oak trees. The district has 76 contributing resources, mostly houses with some garages and sheds, plus one school. Wealthy businessmen and professionals built large homes on spacious lots in the early twentieth century, while salesmen, railroad agents and managers built smaller but stylish houses on neighboring streets. The buildings range from Queen Anne cottages and the circa 1905 T.B. Bunn House to Neoclassical, Colonial Revival, Prairie, Craftsman and Tudor Revival dwellings. Several brick Colonial Revival houses of the 1920s were built for physicians tied to the former Park View Hospital. The 1923 Wilkinson School, designed by Benton and Benton, anchors the southwest edge. The area is recognized for its role in the city's growth and its architecture between about 1900 and 1950.","period_of_significance":"circa 1900-1950","architect_builder":"Stout, John C.; Herman, Thomas; Benton & Benton; Rose and Son, D.J.; Toler, Sam; Lee, Duncan; Derby, E.S.","architectural_style":"Queen Anne, Neoclassical Revival, Foursquare, Colonial Revival, Dutch Colonial Revival, Bungalow/Craftsman, Prairie style, Tudor Revival, Moderne","criteria":["A"],"status_note":"Described as an intact residential area; current functions include single and multiple dwellings, a school and some business use.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:57:53.529363-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7215/47721516/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NC/99001367.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001367/b20f06a6bb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001367/b20f06a6bb-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Nyttend","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:521_Falls_Road,_Rocky_Mount.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Nyttend</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:521_Falls_Road,_Rocky_Mount.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/47721516","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falls_Road_Historic_District","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q19461688"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/north-carolina/nash-county/falls-road-historic-district-99001367/"}
