Fabricated by the Canton Iron Bridge Company and built in 1902, it was moved to this site around 1925.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the bridge is an intact, well-preserved example of a simple turn-of-the-century iron bridge, typical of small rural bridges of the pre-automobile era. It is also significant for its role in the region's transportation history, including reuse after the 1924 flood washed away earlier bridges.","narrative":"Spanning the East Branch of the AuSable River a few miles upstream from Keene Valley, this single-lane Pratt pony truss bridge carries a private road off NYS Route 73. It was fabricated by the Canton Iron Bridge Company of Canton, Ohio, and erected in 1902 in New Russia, in the town of Elizabethtown. Around 1925 it was dismantled and re-erected at its present site by two local men, Jim Brown and George Luck, replacing a bridge lost in the devastating flood of 1924. The metal structure is pin connected, with eye-bar bottom chords and diagonals, stone abutments and a wood deck. Original lattice railings, cast-iron ball finials and the builder's plates survive. The bridge is valued as a well-preserved example of a light rural iron truss from the pre-automobile era, and for its part in the area's transportation history. It is one of several bridges in the valley relocated after the 1924 flood, and it still serves a seasonal home.","period_of_significance":"c.1902-1948","architect_builder":"Canton Iron Bridge Company","architectural_style":"Pratt Pony Truss Bridge","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Privately owned and still in use, providing access to a seasonal cottage on the east side of the river. The wood deck has been replaced in kind.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.938834-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001329.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001329/72f5695279-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001329/72f5695279-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ranney_Bridge,_Keene_Valley,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ranney_Bridge,_Keene_Valley,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312898","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ranney_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7293391"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/ranney-bridge-99001329/"}
