It is also significant for its role in the transportation history of the AuSable River Valley.","narrative":"This single-lane bridge crosses the East Branch of the AuSable River in the middle of Keene Valley, in the Adirondack Park. Built in 1913, it has a shallow reinforced concrete arch faced with random rubble granite, a span of about 62 feet and a 13-foot roadway. Clarence Edmonds, a local builder, did the formwork for the arch, and Italian stone masons brought from Staten Island by the Notman family, summer residents of the valley, built the bridge. It links the Keene Valley Country Club with the Notman cottage of 1885 and provides access to several seasonal homes. Its stone arch, railings and approaches were designed to blend with the river banks, an approach later seen in WPA-era bridges nearby. The bridge reflects the area's move from industry toward tourism and has served local transportation. Repointing and a concrete cap over the stonework were added in 1989, and the bridge keeps much of its original appearance.","period_of_significance":"1913-1948","architect_builder":"Clarence Edmonds (builder)","architectural_style":"OTHER: stone-faced, concrete arch bridge","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Rehabilitated in 1989 and described as being in excellent condition; privately owned and still used to reach seasonal homes on the east side of the river.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.906677-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001328.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001328/37d6e6df93-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001328/37d6e6df93-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Mwanner","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Notman_Bridge,_Keene,_New_York.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Mwanner</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Notman_Bridge,_Keene,_New_York.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75312888","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notman_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7063088"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/essex-county/notman-bridge-99001328/"}
