It is also tied to Milford's early settlement as part of Mendon's Second Parish and to the families who farmed Silver Hill.","narrative":"Built around 1747, this Cape Cod cottage at 44 Silver Hill Road in Milford was home to Azariah Newton and Sarah Jones Newton, and later to the Sumner family. Oral tradition says Sarah's relatives, the Jones brothers, built it. The house has five bays across the front, a center entrance, a gable roof and a large central chimney. A rear ell was added in the mid-nineteenth century. Inside, the plan includes front parlors with raised-panel fireplace walls, a keeping room with a deep cooking fireplace, crane and beehive bake oven, wide pine floorboards and eighteenth-century hardware. Asbestos shingles cover the original clapboards. Early twentieth-century changes included reproduction windows and added exposed beams. The property reflects the farming settlement of Silver Hill, which began when Milford was part of Mendon's Second Parish, and it has served as a single-family home through its history. Archaeological potential for outbuildings, wells and a demolished barn is also noted.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1747-ca. 1945","architect_builder":"Oral tradition credits the sons of John Jones, including Nathaniel Jones, as house builders who built it for Azariah and Sarah Jones Newton","architectural_style":"Colonial - Georgian (Cape Cod cottage)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a single-family dwelling, as it was historically.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:03.622135-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/16/7973/63797316/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/99001252.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001252/566208478f-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001252/566208478f-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MilfordMA_AzariahNewtonHouse.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:MilfordMA_AzariahNewtonHouse.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63797316","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azariah_Newton_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715393"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/worcester-county/newton-azariah-house-99001252/"}
