It is also known as the \"Wedding Present House\".","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an outstanding regional example of Federal style residential architecture in the Hudson River Valley. Its symmetrical five-bay facade, fanlit doorway and tripartite window are notable, as are its Greek Revival era alterations and finely crafted interior details. It also retains a high degree of integrity and recalls the early history of Claverack.","narrative":"Built in 1822 on the north side of Route 23 in the hamlet of Claverack, this brick house was a wedding present from farmer and entrepreneur Peter Mesick to his daughter Catherine and her husband, Dr. Abram Jordan, a physician who joined the Columbia County Medical Society in 1810. The two-story, five-bay dwelling has a center-hall plan, a stone foundation and a standing seam metal roof. Its south facade centers on a doorway with sidelights and a fanlight, topped by an elaborate tripartite window. Greek Revival renovations added pedimented gables with low parapets on the side elevations. Inside, the carved staircase, curly maple balustrade, mantels, moldings, ornamental plaster ceilings and original plank flooring survive. A rear service wing includes an early cooking fireplace and baking oven, and the lot also holds a brick smokehouse from about 1822 and two mid-nineteenth century barns. The property is valued as an outstanding regional example of Federal architecture that reflects the prosperity of early Claverack.","period_of_significance":"ca.1822-ca.1845","architect_builder":"Peter Mesick (built the house in 1822)","architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal; Mid-19th Century/Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the form describes it as retaining an outstanding degree of architectural integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.476098-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001135.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001135/8d14240ffb-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001135/8d14240ffb-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Daniel Case","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abram_Jordan_House,_Claverack,_NY.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Daniel Case</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Abram_Jordan_House,_Claverack,_NY.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317018","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dr._Abram_Jordan_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5303949"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/columbia-county/jordan-dr-abram-house-99001135/"}
