It was built about 1835 as a late Federal style dwelling and later altered into a Swiss Cottage style house.","why_significant":"The nomination presents Springbank as an early-19th-century residence transformed about 1880 into an eclectic estate house. It is cited as an outstanding example of the Roslyn Harbor Estates property type (1830-1930) in architecture and community planning and development. The property was closely tied to the development of neighboring Montrose, the estate of William Cullen Bryant and later the Godwin family.","narrative":"Springbank is a clapboard house on the east side of Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor, built about 1835 as a small, symmetrical, five-bay dwelling in the late Federal style. Around 1880 it was reworked into a Swiss Cottage, gaining a deep front porch with exposed rafters and sawn brackets, a front dormer, and a rear addition. Greek Revival door and window trim survives inside. The house was moved onto its present site sometime between 1876 and 1894. William Cullen Bryant bought the property in 1868 for his daughter Fanny and her husband Parke Godwin, and it later followed the same ownership as the neighboring Montrose estate until both were sold in 1955. A two-story rear ell was added in 1959 and is considered non-contributing, as is the garage. The property is recognized for its architecture and for its role in the development of the Montrose estate, as a Victorianized early-19th-century house.","period_of_significance":"C. 1880","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian/Victorian Eclectic; Mid-19th Century: Greek Revival (a Victorianized late Federal house)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Remains in use as a single dwelling; a 1959 rear ell and a twentieth-century garage are noted as non-contributing.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.010744-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99001128.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001128/58a21d3497-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001128/58a21d3497-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antony-22","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Springbank_House_2016.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony-22</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Springbank_House_2016.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313745","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Springbank_(Roslyn_Harbor,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7580792"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/springbank-99001128/"}
