It is also tied to the Galanis family, who have run a diner at this location since 1947 and expanded their operations across several towns between 1940 and 1960.","narrative":"Agawam Diner, at 166 Newburyport Turnpike in Rowley, Massachusetts, is a large stainless steel diner built in 1954 by Fodero Dining Car Company of Bloomfield, New Jersey. It was first installed in Ipswich and moved to its present site on U.S. Route 1 in 1970. The steel-framed building has red bands, fluted steel pilasters, a projecting center-entry vestibule and curved corner windows. Inside, red vinyl booths, a white Formica counter, terrazzo floors and the original salmon and yellow color scheme remain. The diner reflects the Galanis family's restaurant business, which began in Ipswich in 1940 and has operated at the Rowley location since 1947. The family changed from Worcester barrel-roofed diners to modern Fodero stainless steel models in 1954, then consolidated its locations in 1960 and 1970. The diner is among the better preserved of six Fodero diners remaining in Massachusetts and the best preserved of those built after 1950. It is still used as a restaurant.","period_of_significance":"1954-1970","architect_builder":"Fodero Dining Car Company","architectural_style":"Other: Stainless Steel Diner","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a restaurant, with a well-preserved interior and a ca. 1970 rear addition.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.086851-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/7901/63790150/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/99001124.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001124/432a80ba70-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001124/432a80ba70-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Ethomsen","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Agawamdiner.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Ethomsen</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Agawamdiner.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790150","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agawam_Diner","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4691632"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/essex-county/agawan-diner-99001124/"}
