It is also a well-preserved example of the company's post-World War II remodeling work. Locally, it is tied to the Alexander family, who have owned and operated it for more than fifty years.","narrative":"Miss Florence Diner at 99 Main Street in the Florence village of Northampton is a barrel-roofed diner that Worcester Lunch Car Company built in 1941 and remodeled in the late 1940s. The remodeling added bays to both ends and the rear, producing an eleven-bay facade, a cross-barrel roof and an L-shaped interior. Exterior walls are yellow and red porcelain enamel, and the roofline carries a parapet with moderne lettering and a neon chevron sign by Agnoli Sign Company of Springfield. Inside are a marble counter, nineteen steel stools, wood cabinetry and tiled floors. Maurice and Pauline Alexander opened the diner in 1941, and the family has run it for more than fifty years. It is the only diner in Florence and one of about sixteen Worcester-built diners in Massachusetts from the 1940s. Its significance rests on its well-preserved remodeling and on its place in local commerce, from 1941 to 1949.","period_of_significance":"1941-1949","architect_builder":"Worcester Lunch Car Company; Agnoli Sign Company","architectural_style":"Other: Barrel Roof Diner","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still operating as a restaurant; attached at the rear to a former dwelling that houses a tap room and restaurant.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.040977-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/65/7903/63790365/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/99001123.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001123/d500335514-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99001123/d500335514-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"User:Magicpiano","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthamptonMA_MissFlorenceDiner.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:Magicpiano</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:NorthamptonMA_MissFlorenceDiner.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63790365","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Miss_Florence_Diner","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14715714"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/hampshire-county/miss-florence-diner-99001123/"}
