Brill Company.","why_significant":"It is an important example of rail car-inspired, monitor-roof diner design and is tied to Wason Manufacturing's production of Brill diners from 1927 to 1932. It is one of only two known Brill diners remaining in Massachusetts and the only operating diner in Lynn. It is also associated with the Fennell family, who acquired it in 1938 and have run it since.","narrative":"Capitol Diner, at 431 Union Street in downtown Lynn, is a rail car-style diner built in 1928. The J.G. Brill Company produced it through its Springfield subsidiary, Wason Manufacturing Company. It has the monitor roof of a streetcar, with ten bays, entrances at each end of the long side, and red-painted steel panels. A brick foundation and rear kitchen wing were added in the 1930s. Inside are a full-length counter with eighteen stools, a grill, and tables beneath the windows. The diner matters as one of only two known Brill diners left in Massachusetts and as the only operating diner in Lynn. It also reflects the local business history of the downtown, where it drew customers from the nearby Capitol Theatre. George Fennell acquired it by 1939 and named it, and his family has run it ever since. A fire in 1978 led to renovation, but the historic plan and exterior survive.","period_of_significance":"1928-1949","architect_builder":"J.G.
