The stone house dates to about 1780 and was extended in the early nineteenth century.","why_significant":"The house is argued to be a representative example of late eighteenth century vernacular stone dwelling architecture typical of the Hudson Valley and Ulster County. The surviving Dutch barn, one of only nine of its type left in the town, adds to its importance and illustrates changing farm life. Together the buildings record nearly two centuries of domestic and agricultural building tradition.","narrative":"Set at the end of Winfield Road in the hamlet of Kyserike, this Ulster County farm property combines a stone house and a Dutch barn. The one-and-one-half-story house began as a three-bay stone dwelling around 1780, and two frame bays were added to the north in the early nineteenth century. It has a central entry with sidelights, six-over-six windows, and a Georgian center hall plan with surviving plaster, simple moulding, and some eighteenth century glass. The barn has a central threshing floor, side alleys for livestock, and traditional H-frame construction, with a later English-style frame wing to the east. The property was recognized because the house represents the linear stone dwelling that dominated Ulster County building from the late seventeenth to the mid-nineteenth century. Only nine Dutch barns of this kind remain in the town of Rochester, which raises the value of the complex. Both buildings retain a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"ca.1780-ca.1840","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial/Dutch Colonial; Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Both the house and barn remain in use; the house is a single dwelling and the barn is used for animal facility and storage. The house had a sensitive restoration in 1957 and the barn is described as well preserved.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.126782-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000998.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000998/ff25ab81e7-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000998/ff25ab81e7-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Larry Arvidson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P1050083_131_Sahler_Stone_House_%26_Dutch_Barn,_Winfield_Rd._Rochester,_Ulster_Cnty,_NY.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Arvidson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P1050083_131_Sahler_Stone_House_%26_Dutch_Barn,_Winfield_Rd._Rochester,_Ulster_Cnty,_NY.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315188","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahler_Stone_House_and_Dutch_Barn","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7399689"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/sahler-stone-house-and-dutch-barn-99000998/"}
