The original block is a one-story, one-room stone structure. A larger one-and-one-half story, four-bay stone section was added to the east, followed by frame additions. Inside are hand-hewn beams, wide plank floors, original fireplaces, early moldings and hardware, and a basement cooking hearth. The house represents the linear stone dwelling that dominated Ulster County building from the late seventeenth to the mid nineteenth century. Its stone gable walls rising to the roof peak are unusual in southern Ulster County, where timber-framed, clapboard gables were more common. Despite alterations over nearly two and one-half centuries, it remains an important example of eighteenth-century mid-Hudson Valley vernacular craftsmanship. It is still used as a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"ca.1750-ca.1850","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Colonial/Dutch Colonial","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling; described as substantially intact despite later additions.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.408172-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000992.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000992/b775bbb8cd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000992/b775bbb8cd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Larry Arvidson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P1050090_(130)_Sahler_Stone_House,_Kyserike_Rd.,_Rochester,_Ulster_Cnty,_NY_1.png\" rel=\"noopener\">Larry Arvidson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:P1050090_(130)_Sahler_Stone_House,_Kyserike_Rd.,_Rochester,_Ulster_Cnty,_NY_1.png"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75315192","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sahler_Stone_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7399687"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/ulster-county/sahler-stone-house-99000992/"}
