It is unique among them because it was conceived as a social hall rather than a place of worship. Its open interior, informal furnishings and lightweight materials reflect both its secular origins and its later synagogue use.","narrative":"Set into a steep hillside on Briscoe Road in the Sullivan County hamlet of White Sulphur Springs, this small gable-roofed building was erected in 1934 as a Jewish community center. It served as a social hall for summer residents of a farming and resort community that catered to a large Jewish population. Within a few years it was converted for use as a synagogue, and it is still known locally by that name. Its exterior, with a stepped pedimented parapet, round-arched windows and a Star of David window, recalls Jewish religious architecture. The interior, however, is a single open rectangular room with no vestibule, no separate seating for men and women, and originally movable benches and tables. A player piano recalls its recreational role. Asbestos-cement siding and acoustical panels point to informal seasonal use. It is one of about twenty Jewish religious buildings in the county and the only one conceived as a social hall, and it retains a high degree of integrity.","period_of_significance":"c1934","architect_builder":"Architect unknown; built by a Mr. Zaminsky","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a religious facility; some deterioration of original interior finishes, but retains a high degree of integrity.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.245698-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000991.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000991/6667c91d29-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000991/6667c91d29-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Vonsky87","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jewish_Center_White_Sulphur_Springs,_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Vonsky87</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Jewish_Center_White_Sulphur_Springs,_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322379","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jewish_Community_Center_of_White_Sulphur_Springs","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6189778"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/sullivan-county/jewish-community-center-of-white-sulphur-springs-99000991/"}
