The 1888-1890 main house is also a well-preserved Victorian residence with Italianate and Greek Revival secondary characteristics. It is significant at the local level.","narrative":"Pleasant Grove is a 290-acre tobacco farm in southwestern Halifax County, Virginia, on waters of Miry Creek. David Samuel Farmer established it in the late 1880s on land inherited from his father, and built a two-story Victorian house there, completed in 1890. The house has a two-tier front porch, a bracketed Italianate cornice, and original mantels and a double-run stair inside. Around it stand a smokehouse, cow barn, granary, corncribs, and a row of three log tobacco barns. Four tenant house sites on the farm include a two-story frame house from about 1900, a cinder-block house from about 1940, and two log or frame ruins. The property was recognized for its agricultural importance as a fairly complete Southside Virginia tobacco farm of the 1880s to 1940s, and for the architecture of its well-preserved main house. Its period of significance runs from 1888 through 1949.","period_of_significance":"1888-1949","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Victorian, with Italianate and Greek Revival secondary characteristics","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The main house was rehabilitated in 1998, and two tenant houses were being rehabilitated as a caretaker's residence and a guest house.
