It stands on forty acres with a surviving smokehouse.","why_significant":"The nomination argues Oak Forest is one of the best examples in Hanover County of a Federal-style, single-pile, central-passage I-house. Its interior mantels and paneling are more decorative than is typical in the county's conservative architecture. It retains a high degree of original exterior and interior integrity, and its crossroads location makes it a local landmark.","narrative":"Built about 1828 by Samuel and Catharine Pollard Overton, Oak Forest is a two-story, five-bay frame house standing among oak trees at the crossroads of Rural Point Road and Georgetown Road in central Hanover County. It follows the single-pile, central-passage I-house plan, with beaded weatherboards, brick end chimneys laid in Flemish bond, and pent closets beside the chimneys. The exterior is fairly plain, but the interior has fluted mantel pilasters, fretwork friezes, patera ornament, raised paneling beneath the stair, and original pine floors. Such detail is uncommon in a county known for conservative building. A county survey identified sixty-six houses of this plan, most with few stylistic touches, so Oak Forest is regarded as one of the best Federal-style examples. Additions include a rear ell and front porch from about 1903. A mid- to late-nineteenth-century smokehouse survives, and the crossroads location has made the house a visual landmark. The property is considered locally significant for its architecture.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1828 - 1935","architect_builder":"Unknown (built by Samuel and Catharine Pollard Overton)","architectural_style":"Early Republic - Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single dwelling; the house retains its original interior and exterior finishes, with a bathroom added upstairs and the rear porch recently enclosed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.715962-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/50/6811/41681150/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/99000964.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000964/b5805c2891-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000964/b5805c2891-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Nickmorgan2","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oak_Forest.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Nickmorgan2</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Oak_Forest.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41681150","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oak_Forest_(Mechanicsville,_Virginia)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q14712988"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/hanover-county/oak-forest-99000964/"}
