It was built in 1832-33 and is locally known as the 'Yellow Church'.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the church is an exceptionally intact example of traditional frame meeting house architecture in Delaware County. It retains a restrained Federal style entrance, a raised pulpit, a horseshoe gallery and original finishes. The adjoining cemetery, established at the same time, adds to its setting and significance.","narrative":"Known locally as the Yellow Church, this Old School Baptist meeting house sits on the east side of County Route 41 south of Roxbury, with its cemetery alongside. The congregation was formed in 1816 from the First Old School Baptist Church at Batavia Kill and met in a schoolhouse for its first seventeen years. Construction of the church began in 1832, and the first services were held there in April 1833. The two-story, hand-hewn timber frame building has clapboard siding, a pedimented gable and a restrained Federal style entrance with paired six-panel doors. Inside, a raised pulpit, a horseshoe gallery, simple wood pews, original plaster and original stoves survive. Windows behind the pulpit follow the traditional meeting house plan. A carriage step and a small outhouse also contribute to the property. The nomination values the church as a well-preserved regional example of the meeting house type, with a cemetery that records local funerary customs.","period_of_significance":"1832-ca. 1949","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Early Republic/Federal","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"The form notes a lack of use in the late twentieth century, while the building remains virtually intact inside and out.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.337836-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000908.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000908/0cb65adf86-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000908/0cb65adf86-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Upstate New York","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Second_Old_School_Baptist_Church_of_Roxbury_Feb_09.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Upstate New York</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Second_Old_School_Baptist_Church_of_Roxbury_Feb_09.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317263","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Second_Old_School_Baptist_Church_of_Roxbury","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7443455"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/second-old-school-baptist-church-of-roxbury-99000908/"}
