It is a one and one-half story wood-frame house with an intersecting gable roof, dark-stained wood shingle walls, wide eaves, brick porch piers and a full basement. Inside, the living room has a beamed ceiling and fireside inglenook, and the dining room has wood paneling, built-in china cabinets and leaded glass pocket doors. William Childs, a telephone and telegraph equipment inventor from New Jersey, built it as one of five residences on the 200-acre Monte Vista Nursery, which was later subdivided. Louis du Puget Millar and George A. Clark designed it, and it is their only known collaboration in Riverside. It is regarded as one of the city's best Craftsman bungalows for its design, materials and siting, reflecting the Arts and Crafts tradition that spread from Pasadena. The city designated it Landmark No. 81.","period_of_significance":"1910","architect_builder":"Millar, Louis du Puget; Clark, George A.","architectural_style":"Craftsman","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Described as in excellent condition with only minor alterations since construction; still used as a single dwelling.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:54:26.881149-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_CA/99000895.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000895/ac0fe7618e-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000895/ac0fe7618e-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D.","credit_html":"JERRYE & ROY KLOTZ, M.D., CC BY-SA 4.0, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WILLIAM_CHILDS_HOUSE_RIVERSIDE_COUNTY_CA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/123860447","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q133440995"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/california/riverside-county/childs-william-house-99000895/"}
