Its significance lies in how an 18th century farmhouse was adapted for estate use rather than in its earlier history. It is one of three surviving 18th century houses in the village.","narrative":"Built around 1740, this farmhouse in Roslyn Harbor is believed to be the village's oldest surviving house. It began as the home of the Mudge family, who farmed about 100 acres nearby; Michael Mudge bought the farm in 1745. Around 1868 William Cullen Bryant acquired the house and moved it to serve his daughter Fanny's Montrose estate. About 1920 it was moved again to its present site on Motts Cove Road, where a north addition and south sun porch were added. The architect may have been John Russell Pope, brother-in-law of the owner at that time. Oak timbers joined with mortise and tenon, raised-panel fireplace walls, Dutch doors and 12/8 sash survive from the earlier house. The property is important as an example of how settlement-period houses were altered for estate use between 1830 and 1930, and it is one of only three 18th century houses remaining in Roslyn Harbor.","period_of_significance":"C. 1920","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th & Early 20th Century Revivals / Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently used as a single dwelling, as in its historic use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.491667-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000876.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000876/e6f714cb7d-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000876/e6f714cb7d-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antony-22","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mudge_Farmhouse_2016.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony-22</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Mudge_Farmhouse_2016.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313735","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mudge_Farmhouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q6931728"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/mudge-farmhouse-99000876/"}
