It retains original Italianate and Gothic-detailed interior features. Its owners probably included local ship captains, and later Nora Godwin, a granddaughter of William Cullen Bryant.","narrative":"This two-and-one-half story timber frame house at 450 Bryant Avenue in Roslyn Harbor was built about 1860 in a vernacular Italianate style. It sits at the base of a steep hill, screened by mature plantings. Typical period details include overhanging eaves with scrollwork brackets, paired front doors with etched glass, and flat-board window trim. Inside, original wide pine floors, plaster cove ceilings and Gothic-detailed fireplaces survive. Around 1911, during Nora Godwin's ownership, the house was enlarged with a north porch, a raised rear ell, a front dormer and a larger front porch. The land passed from the Hicks family to Stephen Smith in 1850, and the house was probably built during his ownership. Charles Smith acquired it in 1868. Neither man's identity is firmly established, though several ship captains lived on the east side of the harbor. The house was listed as a good example of small residential architecture from 1850 to 1890 and for its role in the community's development. It remains a single-family home.","period_of_significance":"C. 1860","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian / Italianate","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still used as a single-family dwelling, with a modern non-contributing garage at the rear.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:51.589852-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000873.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000873/c5cb355585-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000873/c5cb355585-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"Antony-22","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith_House_2016.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Antony-22</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Smith_House_2016.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75313741","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stephen_and_Charles_Smith_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7610914"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/nassau-county/smith-stephen-and-charles-house-99000873/"}
