It also reflects the growth and prosperity of the Erie Canal village and shows changing tastes in church design through later alterations. It long served as the village's largest place of public assembly.","narrative":"Built in 1852-53 on State Street in the historic core of Brockport, this Greek Revival church is a red brick building on a raised fieldstone basement, with sandstone and limestone trim, double pilasters between the bays, and a three-stage tower topped by a spire. A gabled vestibule added in 1901 reuses the original Corinthian columns. Inside, the sanctuary follows the Protestant meeting house plan, with a three-sided gallery on fluted Doric columns and a coffered ceiling. An 1891-92 remodeling moved the organ and choir behind the pulpit, and the main windows were reglazed in 1942. The church replaced a smaller brick building of 1830-31 and reflects the prosperity of the Erie Canal village. For generations it was the largest public meeting space in town, hosting an 1857 anti-slavery lecture by Cassius M. Clay, Civil War recruitment and rallies, temperance meetings, and the 1859 founding meeting of the local YMCA. It remains in religious use.","period_of_significance":"1852-1942","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-19th Century / Greek Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Still in religious use; the form notes a high level of architectural integrity, though decorative scroll brackets on the tower drum were removed due to deterioration.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.984861-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000752.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000752/6d0f65a984-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000752/6d0f65a984-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"LtPowers","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brockport_-_First_Presbyterian_Church.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">LtPowers</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brockport_-_First_Presbyterian_Church.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"15000538","name":"Park Avenue and State Street Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/new-york/park-avenue-and-state-street-historic-district-15000538/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318820","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Presbyterian_Church_(Brockport,_New_York)","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5453541"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/monroe-county/first-presbyterian-church-99000752/"}
