It is now a public museum owned by the city.","why_significant":"The nomination argues the house is an excellent example of a rare brick I-house with Folk Victorian elements, a type uncommon in Georgia's mountain region. Fewer than one percent of buildings in the state survey are brick-bearing I-houses. It also retains much of its original plan and handcrafted interior features.","narrative":"Built in 1893 in the north Georgia town of Blue Ridge, the James W. Baugh Homeplace is a two-story brick I-house with a central hallway plan. James W. Baugh and his brothers, who were skilled masons, constructed it with bricks made on the site. The house has load-bearing brick walls, a steeply pitched gabled roof, narrow four-over-four windows and two gable-end chimneys. Folk Victorian touches, including chamfered porch supports, brackets and a second-story balustrade, decorate the front porch. Inside, hand-planed trim and plaster applied directly to the brick survive. Brick houses are relatively rare in Georgia, and brick I-houses are rarer still, making up less than one percent of buildings in the state survey. The house was altered around 1915 with a new front porch, an interior staircase and an attached kitchen. The city acquired the property in the late twentieth century, and it now serves as a museum. Its significance is architectural and local.","period_of_significance":"1893-1915","architect_builder":"James W.
