It was designed by staff architect Victor Mendleheff and also reflects maritime rescue history at Quogue, including later Coast Guard and Navy use.","narrative":"Built in 1912 on a barrier beach south of Quogue village, this life-saving station housed the crew and equipment of the U.S. Life-Saving Service. It follows one of several standard designs prepared by staff architect Victor Mendleheff, and is called the Lorain Type. The wood-framed building sits on a concrete foundation, is clad in wood shingles, and has a four-story lookout tower at the center of its north front. Its flared gable ends hint at the Shingle Style. Interior layout and finishes remain largely intact, including plaster walls, wainscoting, panel doors and the old crew quarters. Alterations in 1931 and 1939 enclosed porches, lowered the boatroom floor and ceiling, and enlarged the kitchen. The station later served the Coast Guard and the Navy before being sold in 1948. It is now a private home restored after 1994. It is considered one of the best-preserved pre-1915 stations on Long Island and recalls local rescues and wartime beach patrols.","period_of_significance":"1912-1948","architect_builder":"Mendleff, Victor (U.S. Life-Saving Service)","architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Shingle Style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Currently a single-family dwelling, restored after 1994 purchase; wood shingles replaced the cement-asbestos covering and a new asphalt roof was installed.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.836539-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000640.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000640/1e1981f9e9-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000640/1e1981f9e9-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Dmadeo","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Quogue_Life-Saving_Station,_Quogue_NY.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Dmadeo</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Quogue_Life-Saving_Station,_Quogue_NY.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75322212","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quogue_Life-Saving_Station","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7272834"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/suffolk-county/quogue-life-saving-station-99000640/"}
