It was built in 1870 in Delhi and moved 3 miles upstream to its present site in 1885.","why_significant":"The bridge is significant for transportation and engineering as a rare, substantially intact example of rural vernacular bridge building in the Catskill region. It uses the patented Town lattice truss and is one of only 10 such examples left in New York State. It also shows the 19th-century practice of reusing sound bridges at new sites, and it has been in continuous public use.","narrative":"Spanning the West Branch of the Delaware River at East Delhi, this 106-foot covered timber bridge was first built in 1870 by local builders James Frazer and James Warren to carry traffic on Kingston Street in Delhi. In 1885, when a new bridge was needed there, town officials had it dismantled and hauled by wagon three miles to its present site, where it was reassembled. Its web uses the Town lattice truss, with intersecting plank diagonals joined by wooden pins, set on fieldstone abutments faced with concrete and sheathed in vertical boards under a metal roof. It is one of only 10 Town truss covered bridges remaining in New York and one of four qualifying covered timber bridges in Delaware County. Delaware County restored it in 1976, replacing the deck, some floorbeams and rehabilitating the abutments. It still serves as a public crossing, showing vernacular Catskill bridge building and the reuse of sound bridges.","period_of_significance":"1870-1885","architect_builder":"James Frazer & James Warren (builders)","architectural_style":"No style","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Still in use as a public crossing of the West Branch of the Delaware River; restored by Delaware County in 1976 and preserved as a landmark by the county Department of Public Works.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.358198-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000508.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000508/e2a8903522-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000508/e2a8903522-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fitches_Covered_Bridge_Nov_04.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">Doug Kerr from Albany, New York, United States</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Fitches_Covered_Bridge_Nov_04.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75317211","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fitches_Bridge","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5455432"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/delaware-county/fitches-covered-bridge-99000508/"}
