It also illustrates the tradition of teaching children of all grades in a single room and served the Northrup Hill community until 1960.","narrative":"Northrup Hill School District 10 is a one-room frame schoolhouse on a 1.6-acre lot in rural Rathbone, Steuben County, New York. Built around 1850 in a vernacular Greek Revival style, it is a rectangular, gable-roofed building with clapboard siding and a stone foundation. In the 1920s the entry vestibule was enlarged and an open porch added to the front. Inside, the single open classroom survives, along with horizontal board walls, a chair rail and several original chalkboards. The school served a community settled in the 1820s and 1830s by members of the Northrup family, who made up most of its pupils; in 1863, 31 of 47 pupils were Northrups. It operated as a school until 1960, then stood vacant and deteriorated. Restoration followed the Secretary of the Interior's Standards, and a local historical society plans to open it as a museum. It was recognized for its education history and as an intact example of a rural one-room schoolhouse.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1850s - ca. 1920s","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Mid-nineteenth century: Greek Revival (vernacular)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Vacant since the 1960s and deteriorated by the mid-1990s; being restored for conversion to a museum.","vacant_flag":true,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.811558-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000196.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000196/02bbc27533-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000196/02bbc27533-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 4.0","author":"JanieLFerguson","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Northrup-School-House-%26-Sign-7-8-2017.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">JanieLFerguson</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/4.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 4.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Northrup-School-House-%26-Sign-7-8-2017.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75321999","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northrup_Hill_School_District_10","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7059697"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/steuben-county/northrup-hill-school-district-10-99000196/"}
