It has served as a hub of religious and social life in the rural community since 1861. Its 1925 interior remodeling is also considered to contribute to its significance.","narrative":"Built in 1861 for a Congregational congregation, this clapboard church sits on a small lot in the historic core of the hamlet of Otto in northwestern Cattaraugus County. It is a rectangular, gable-roofed frame building on a stone foundation, with a central bell tower, round-arched stained-glass windows, bracketed cornices and a polygonal apse. The congregation began in 1828, first as Presbyterian, and worshipped in homes and barns until the church was erected for about $3,000. With room for 300 people, it long served as the largest public space in the area and met social, educational and political needs as well as religious ones. The steeple was removed after tornado damage in 1917, and the interior was largely remodeled in 1925 with new pews, memorial windows, gas lights and a salvaged pressed-metal ceiling. Services ended in 1946, and since 1969 the building has been a museum, preserving its architecture and its 1861 to 1925 character.","period_of_significance":"1861-1925","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late 19th Century: Vernacular (Italianate-inspired)","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Now used as a museum (Medora Ball Historic Museum); the building was vacant after regular services ended in 1946 and was deeded to the historical society in 1969.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.433668-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000194.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000194/343a9621c8-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000194/343a9621c8-1600.webp","licence":"Public domain","author":"Pubdog (talk)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Congregational_Church_of_Otto_Aug_10.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Pubdog (talk)</a>, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:First_Congregational_Church_of_Otto_Aug_10.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75316644","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/First_Congregational_Church_of_Otto","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q5452857"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/cattaraugus-county/first-congregational-church-of-otto-99000194/"}
