It now houses a historical museum.","why_significant":"It is the only Universalist church in Orleans and a well-preserved Greek Revival church, and the most intact 19th-century church in town. It reflects the 1830s split within the Congregational Church that produced many splinter societies. With the Congregational and Baptist churches, it helped make East Orleans the town's civic and cultural center.","narrative":"Built in 1834 at 3 River Road in Orleans, Massachusetts, this Greek Revival meetinghouse was erected for a Universalist congregation that had broken away from the town's Congregational Church. David Taylor, Jr., a local carpenter, built it on land bought from his father. The two-story wood-frame building rests on a rough-cut granite foundation and has a front-facing gable, two identical entries, a pedimented gable with an arched tracery window, and tall side windows. About 15 feet was added to the west end in the mid-19th century. Inside, a curved balcony on Tuscan columns survives with its original pews, while a later pressed-metal ceiling covers the original one. The Universalists merged with the Congregationalists in 1939, and the Orleans Historical Society bought the building in 1971 for use as a museum. It is the only Universalist church in town and the best-preserved 19th-century church in Orleans. A relocated 1939 chapel on the lot is not counted as historic.","period_of_significance":"1834-1949","architect_builder":"Taylor, David, Jr. (builder)","architectural_style":"Greek Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Used as a historical museum by the Orleans Historical Society since 1971; the Hurd Chapel on the lot is used for storage.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:13:04.297535-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/80/7940/63794080/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_MA/99000186.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000186/5a63a225be-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000186/5a63a225be-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 3.0","author":"John Phelan","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Universalist_Society_Meetinghouse,_Orleans_MA.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">John Phelan</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Universalist_Society_Meetinghouse,_Orleans_MA.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/63794080","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Universalist_Society_Meetinghouse","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7894184"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/massachusetts/barnstable-county/universalist-society-meetinghouse-99000186/"}
