It shows a low-rise, low-density wartime housing community with a planned landscape of open space and woodland. It was designed by Leonard Schultze and Associates with site planners Clarke and Rapuano, and it retains excellent integrity.","narrative":"Parkfairfax is a 132-acre garden apartment community in northwest Alexandria, Virginia, built between 1941 and 1943. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company developed it during the wartime housing shortage in the Washington area. It has 285 red brick apartment buildings of two or three stories, with gable roofs and Colonial Revival detailing, containing 1,684 apartments in 25 building types. Leonard Schultze and Associates designed the buildings, Clarke and Rapuano planned the site, and Starrett Brothers and Eken built it. Winding streets, cul-de-sacs, village-green style groupings and preserved woodland keep the buildings to about one-tenth of the land, and utilities were buried underground. Wartime material shortages produced variations in floors and brick. The apartments later became condominiums, and the buildings remain largely unchanged apart from some replacement windows and air conditioners. The district was recognized for its architecture, its community planning and its connection to wartime housing needs.","period_of_significance":"1941-1943","architect_builder":"Leonard Schultze and Associates - architect; Clarke, Gilmore D., and Rapuano, Michael - site planners; Starrett Brothers and Eken, Inc. - builder","architectural_style":"Colonial Revival","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"Apartments were converted to condominiums in the 1970s; all original apartment buildings remain and the community is in residential use.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:00.81656-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/opastorage/live/32/6794/41679432/content/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_VA/99000146.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000146/25bd4a1356-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000146/25bd4a1356-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY 2.5","author":"AjaxSmack at en.wikipedia","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parkfairfax.JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">AjaxSmack at en.wikipedia</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/2.5\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY 2.5</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Parkfairfax.JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/41679432","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parkfairfax,_Virginia","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7138458"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/virginia/alexandria/parkfairfax-historic-district-99000146/"}
