It sits on a lot with a non-contributing garage.","why_significant":"The house is nominated for architecture as an excellent example, and the only one in Plymouth, of the Second Empire style. Its mansard roof with patterned slate, dormers, bracketed cornice and two-story porch are characteristic of the style. Its clapboard walls are unusual for Second Empire buildings in Richland County, where most other examples were brick.","narrative":"Built between about 1867 and 1870 at the corner of Railroad and Mills Streets in Plymouth, Ohio, this frame house is the village's only example of the Second Empire style. Its defining feature is a mansard roof covered in imbricated slate, pierced by ten hooded dormers and resting on a bracketed cornice with carved wood details. Double-hung windows have decorative bracketed lintels, and a two-story porch with chamfered posts marks the center bay. Henry Tubbs, owner of the village planing mill, bought the land in 1867 and lived there until his death in 1903. The Sourwine family owned the house from 1919 to 1997, and in the 1960s it served as a rooming house for railroad workers. Aluminum siding added around 1960 was removed, exposing the original clapboard, which is unusual in Richland County, where other Second Empire buildings were mostly brick. The house reflects the village's growing prosperity after the Civil War and was being converted to a bed and breakfast.","period_of_significance":"c. 1867","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"Late Victorian: Second Empire","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Undergoing restoration and rehabilitation for use as a bed and breakfast at the time of the nomination.","vacant_flag":null,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.16364-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/99000094.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000094/735c273d56-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000094/735c273d56-1600.webp","licence":"CC0","author":"User:OHWiki","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tubbs-Sourwine_House.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">User:OHWiki</a>, <a href=\"http://creativecommons.org/publicdomain/zero/1.0/deed.en\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Tubbs-Sourwine_House.jpg"},"district":{"nrhp_refnum":"100003245","name":"Plymouth Historic District","url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/districts/ohio/plymouth-historic-district-100003245/"},"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71991106","wikipedia":null,"wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q138666792"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/richland-county/tubbs-sourwine-house-99000094/"}
