It served tourists, commerce and the newly opened prison, and it is an important link in the region's transportation history.","narrative":"This small railroad depot in Napanoch, Ulster County, was built in 1903 by the Ontario & Western Railroad to designs by the New York firm of Jackson, Rosencrans & Canfield. It is a one-story, five-bay wood-frame building with stucco over metal lath, round-arched openings, a hipped roof with Spanish tile cresting, and bracketed waiting sheds at each end that keep their original brick paving. Inside are a waiting room, ticket office, lavatories and baggage area, all with original finishes. The station followed a standard plan for rural and resort stops and has a twin that once stood at Kerhonkson. It carried visitors, freight and the inmates and guards of the new prison nearby. Passenger service was curtailed in 1953, the line was abandoned, and the tracks were removed in the late 1950s. Its elaborate dome was removed in the mid-twentieth century because of deterioration. The building is now vacant. It was listed for its architecture and its place in regional transportation history.","period_of_significance":"1903","architect_builder":"Jackson, Rosencrans & Canfield","architectural_style":"Late 19th and Twentieth Century Revivals/Classical Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Current function is listed as vacant.
