It was built in 1899 as a Universalist church hall and has been occupied by the local Grange since 1929.","why_significant":"The hall is described as a substantially intact, representative example of a rural Grange hall of the early twentieth century. It has a large meeting room/auditorium and kitchen and dining facilities, and it served as the social focus of the surrounding farming community. The Grange converted the building in 1929, and the listing record sets the period of significance at 1929-1949.","narrative":"Standing on the south side of Route 29 in the hamlet of Salisbury Center, this 2 1/2-story wood frame building was put up in 1899 as a Universalist church hall. In 1929 the local Grange chapter, No. 624, acquired it by trading its former GAR building and paying an additional $1,500. The Grangers then raised the one-story building to create a dining room, kitchen and furnace room in the basement. The plain, rectangular, clapboard-sided hall has a steeply pitched metal roof, tall two-over-two windows, and an interior of varnished beadboard around a large meeting room with a raised stage. Grange halls like this one served farm families as venues for dances, card parties, stage shows, lectures and community suppers. Membership peaked at 332 in 1932, and the building was used for patriotic rallies and Red Cross work during both World Wars. It was listed for its social history and for being a highly intact example of a rural Grange hall.","period_of_significance":"1929-1949","architect_builder":null,"architectural_style":"No style (vernacular frame building)","criteria":["A","C"],"status_note":"The Salisbury Center Grange No. 624 remains active and has carefully maintained the hall; it is still used as a meeting hall.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:51:50.788534-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_NY/99000056.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000056/a70782ebbd-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/99000056/a70782ebbd-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 2.0","author":"dougtone (Doug Kerr)","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salisbury_Center_Grange_Hall_Jan_11.jpg\" rel=\"noopener\">dougtone (Doug Kerr)</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 2.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Salisbury_Center_Grange_Hall_Jan_11.jpg"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/75318192","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Salisbury_Center_Grange_Hall","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q7404749"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/new-york/herkimer-county/salisbury-center-grange-hall-99000056/"}
