It was moved in 1996 from Cleveland Avenue NW to 1627 Market Avenue N. in Canton, Stark County, Ohio.","why_significant":"The house is an intact example of Tudor Revival architecture and the only known Tudor Revival design by Guy Tilden, Canton's premier architect from about 1883 to 1920. It is considered his finest surviving residential commission, especially for its original interior woodwork, glass and fixtures. Its move was judged acceptable because it saved the house from demolition and placed it in a more fitting residential setting.","narrative":"This 2 1/2 story brick, stucco and half-timbered house in Canton, Ohio, was built around 1911 to a design by architect Guy Tilden. Originally at 1221 Cleveland Avenue NW, it was moved in 1996 to a corner lot on North Market Avenue to save it from demolition for a new drug store. The Tudor Revival exterior features a tiled pyramidal roof, gabled bays, grouped windows and stained glass transoms. Inside, dark oak paneling, coffered ceilings, carved ornament, oak and marble fireplaces and an arcaded Tudor arch staircase survive, along with original lighting, a servant call system, a built-in vacuum system and period kitchen and bathroom fittings. It was built for Anna E. Martin and her nephew Brooke. It is the only known Tudor Revival work by Tilden, who designed about fifty Canton buildings, and is the best surviving example of his houses, since many of his other works have been demolished. Its integrity and craftsmanship support its recognition for architecture.","period_of_significance":"ca. 1911","architect_builder":"Tilden, Guy; architect","architectural_style":"Late 19th and 20th Century Revivals: Tudor Revival","criteria":["C"],"status_note":"Moved in 1996 to avoid demolition for a drug store; still used as a single dwelling with largely original interior features.","vacant_flag":false,"machine_generated":true,"model":"claude-sonnet-5-5","prompt_version":"v1.0-2026-10-29","generated_at":"2026-10-29 02:52:07.255114-05","source_pdf":"https://s3.amazonaws.com/NARAprodstorage/lz/electronic-records/rg-079/NPS_OH/98001642.pdf"},"photo":{"url_800":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001642/13491421d2-800.webp","url_1600":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/media/98001642/13491421d2-1600.webp","licence":"CC BY-SA 3.0","author":"Sanfranman59","credit_html":"<a href=\"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brooke_and_Anna_E._Martin_House_(Canton,_OH).JPG\" rel=\"noopener\">Sanfranman59</a>, <a href=\"https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0\" rel=\"license noopener\">CC BY-SA 3.0</a>, via Wikimedia Commons","source_page":"https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Brooke_and_Anna_E._Martin_House_(Canton,_OH).JPG"},"district":null,"sources":{"nps_snapshot_date":"2026-05-22","nara_catalog":"https://catalog.archives.gov/id/71986200","wikipedia":"https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brooke_and_Anna_E._Martin_House","wikidata":"https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q4974501"},"indexable":true,"url":"https://nationalhistoricalregister.com/ohio/stark-county/martin-brooke-and-anna-e-house-98001642/"}
